Who they are
Vitalik Buterin is a Russian-born Canadian programmer best known as the primary co-founder of Ethereum. He proposed the idea in a 2013 whitepaper as a general-purpose, programmable blockchain rather than just digital money.
History
Ethereum went live in July 2015, built with co-founders including Gavin Wood and Joseph Lubin. Buterin has since steered its research direction, most notably the 2022 move to proof-of-stake known as The Merge, and remains one of the loudest advocates for layer-2 scaling and public-goods funding. In January 2025 he switched his profile picture to a Milady NFT, briefly making crypto headlines.
