Origin

Bongo Cat has an unusually well-documented birth, complete with two named parents and a timestamp. On 7 May 2018 the artist @StrayRogue posted a small animated GIF of a simple cartoon cat smacking a table with its two front paws. There were no bongos. There was no sound. It was a cat hitting a table, drawn in about four colours. Later the same day, @DitzyFlama replied to the post with an edit that added a pair of bongo drums under the paws and synced the animation to "Athletic" from the Super Mario World soundtrack. The illusion is not sophisticated. The cat is not really playing anything; the timing just happens to line up. But that is exactly the trick that made it work, because once you accept that the cat is playing bongos, you accept that the cat can play anything.
