Robinhood co-founder and CEO Vlad Tenev has said in interviews that the company's earliest internal codename was CashCat, imagined as a mascot cat carrying money, before the founders decided it was not powerful enough and settled on Robinhood. That piece of trivia sat dormant for years. On July 1, 2026, Robinhood launched Robinhood Chain, an Arbitrum-based Ethereum layer-2, and within days an anonymous community minted a CASHCAT token that leaned entirely on the forgotten name, making it the chain's first native meme hit.

The token detonated around July 8, 2026, surging roughly 1,700 percent in 24 hours to a market cap above 120 million dollars after Tenev himself tweeted that the new chain ran memes pretty well too. Crypto outlets including Odaily, KuCoin, HTX and Bitcoin Foundation covered the run, and Yahoo Finance reported one trader who turned 85 dollars into about 2 million. As with any viral ticker, counterfeit CASHCAT tokens quickly appeared on Solana and other chains alongside impersonator accounts.
Legacy
CashCat became the proof-of-concept meme for Robinhood Chain, a reminder that in memecoin culture a discarded brand name and a cartoon cat with cash can outrun any roadmap. It happens to share a name and a look with the older CashCats Tumblr blog that Will Zweigart started in 2011 to collect photos of cats posing with money, but the 2026 coin's story is Robinhood's, not the blog's. The project has no official tie to Robinhood and describes itself as pure cat, zero utility.
