Catcoin
Catcoin is the original cat-themed cryptocurrency, launched in December 2013 as a feline answer to the just-exploded Dogecoin. Born from a Bitcointalk joke that 'the obvious next step after a dog coin is a cat coin,' it predates every whisker-branded token that came after and is regarded as the first cat meme coin in crypto history.
Origin
On December 21, 2013, forum user kr105 (Carlos Pizarro), a Senior Member on Bitcointalk, posted the pre-announcement thread topic 380130, '[ANN] Catcoin - Scrypt meow!' The coin's genesis block and wallet followed on December 23-24, 2013. It was a straightforward Scrypt proof-of-work coin: 21 million max supply, 50 CAT block reward, 10-minute block time, halving every 210,000 blocks, zero premine — Bitcoin's economics wearing a cat costume, released directly in the wake of Dogecoin's viral rise.
Spread
The [ANN] thread grew to 400+ pages of miners, traders and cat-meme posters during the 2013-2014 altcoin mania. Catcoin got exchange listings and a passionate community, becoming the canonical 'first cat coin' referenced whenever the cat-vs-dog meme-coin rivalry comes up. It is catalogued on CoinGecko, CoinMarketCap, CoinPaprika, FXEmpire and CryptoSlate, and is repeatedly cited by crypto media as the pioneer of the cat meme-coin category.
Legacy
Catcoin is the ancestor of the entire cat meme-coin genre (POPCAT, MEW, and countless others). More than a decade later the original creator kr105 returned: thecatcoinproject.org publishes a memoir posted from the same 2013 Bitcointalk account, and the Solana token below is presented as his fresh Solana-era continuation of the Catcoin name, distinct from the still-running 2013 L1 chain.
