Layer 1 · The Lore

Origin

The dancers are the Nana Otafrija pallbearing group from Prampram, Ghana, led by Benjamin Aidoo, who added choreography to funeral services starting in the 2000s. A BBC News feature in 2017 first brought them international attention. In early 2020 their footage was paired with 'Astronomia,' a track by Russian producer Tony Igy famously remixed by Dutch duo Vicetone.

Spread

Beginning February and March 2020, TikTok and YouTube creators tacked the dancing-pallbearers clip onto the end of fail or accident videos as a darkly comic way to imply the person had died. The format exploded during the early COVID-19 lockdowns, becoming one of the defining memes of 2020.

Legacy

Coffin Dance turned a Ghanaian funeral tradition into a worldwide symbol of gallows humor, sitting alongside 'To Be Continued' as a punchline for disaster clips. Benjamin Aidoo and his dancers gained international fame from it.
