Coughing Cat
Coughing Cat cat with its mouth stretched into an impossible circle and its eyes gone wide and glassy, which is not a real cat face but a photoshop. Somebody looked at it and decided it was exactly how small children cough, and that single caption turned a doctored animal picture into one of the most reused reaction images of the late 2010s. It is still working eight years later, mostly on TikTok, where the format switched from the photoshop to real video of real cats freeze framed at the worst possible moment.
Origin
On 27 November 2018 the Instagram account idascreatures, which posts photoshopped animals as its entire premise, published a picture of an open mouthed, wide eyed cat. On its own it was a good bit of image editing and nothing more. The caption that made it happened a week later. On 3 December 2018 the Twitter user aliahgeyes posted the image with the line "This is how little kids cough," and that comparison did the work. The tweet took over 200,000 retweets and around 630,000 likes. Anyone who has been near a coughing five year old recognised it instantly, which is the whole trick: the image is absurd, the observation is accurate, and the gap between the two is the joke.
Spread
From December 2018 onward it did the standard reaction image tour. It became an exploitable macro, a reply image, a sticker, and a stock response to anybody describing an embarrassing physical noise. It was one of the last images to properly win Twitter before the platform's meme economy fragmented into short video. The second wave rebuilt it from scratch. Instead of the single photoshop, TikTok creators started using genuine clips of cats mid cough, freezing on the frame where the animal's face collapses, and layering a confession caption over it. Same joke, different substrate, no editing required. The cat does it to itself.
Legacy
Coughing Cat is a useful marker for when internet humour stopped needing captions to be funny and started needing timing. The 2018 version was an image plus a line of text. The 2024 onward version is a video paused at the correct millisecond. The comedy moved from writing to editing. It also has an unusually well documented crypto tail for a meme this old. Four separate Solana tokens named after it were minted inside three weeks in March 2024, and all of them sat dead on the bonding curve for over two years. One of them finally graduated in August 2026, which is the closest thing memecoin trading has to an exhumation.
