Derp & Derpina
Derp & Derpina is a generic cross-eyed, slack-jawed character embodying stupidity; Derpina is his female counterpart, both used as stand-in idiots in rage comics.
Origin
The word derp traces to a 1998 South Park sketch, but the cross-eyed Derp rage character coalesced around 2009 to 2011 as a blank everyman for dumb behavior. Derpina followed as the female version, usually with a bow or hair to distinguish her.
Spread
Derp and Derpina became the default nameless cast of rage comics, plugged in whenever a comic needed a generic person to do something foolish. Derp also thrived as standalone slang for anything silly or brain-dead.
Legacy
The pair are the connective tissue of the rage-comic universe, and derp outlived the comics entirely as durable internet slang still in casual use today.
