Fred the Raccoon

Fred the Raccoon the Raccoon was a rescued North American raccoon who lived at P'Nuts Freedom Farm in upstate New York and was seized and euthanized alongside the internet-famous Peanut the Squirrel by New York state authorities in late October 2024. Fred became the quieter half of one of the most politically charged animal-rights firestorms of the year, remembered as the raccoon who died next to a squirrel over a rabies test that came back negative.

Layer 1 · The Lore

Origin

Fred belonged to Mark Longo, the same New York man who had raised Peanut the Squirrel for roughly seven years after finding him orphaned as a pup. Longo ran P'Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, opened in April 2023, which cared for around 300 animals. On 30 October 2024, officers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation raided Longo's home following complaints about wildlife being kept and fears of rabies exposure. Both Peanut and Fred the raccoon were seized. Officials said Peanut bit a person during the operation, which triggered mandatory rabies protocol. On 1 November 2024, Longo announced that both animals had been euthanized so their brain tissue could be tested for rabies. The tests later came back negative.

Spread

While Peanut was the headline, Fred's name spread with him as the story exploded across X, TikTok, Instagram and Reddit. The pair drew comparisons to the 2016 Harambe outrage and became a rallying symbol against government overreach. Prominent political figures weighed in, memes and fan art of the squirrel-and-raccoon duo circulated widely, and the DEC faced enough public backlash that the story dominated news cycles for days. Justice for Peanut and Fred became a recurring online refrain, cementing Fred as more than a footnote.

Legacy

Fred endures as the raccoon whose death, alongside Peanut's, turned a local wildlife seizure into a national argument about bureaucracy, pets and animal rights. Longo and his family pursued legal action against New York State over the seizure and killings, keeping both animals in the news. In the memecoin world, Fred and Peanut both spawned tribute tokens as traders memorialized and monetized the outrage, with Fred typically cast as the loyal sidekick to Peanut's martyr.
