Origin
Grumpy Cat's first photos were posted to reddit in September 2012 by Bryan Bundesen, brother of owner Tabatha Bundesen. Commenters suspected the scowl was faked with Photoshop until video proved the frown was entirely natural.
Spread
The image macros went viral almost overnight, captioned with deadpan refusals and misanthropic one-liners like I had fun once, it was awful. Grumpy Cat was fast-tracked into a commercial empire: books, merchandise, a Lifetime movie, and celebrity appearances.
Legacy
Grumpy Cat became arguably the most commercially successful internet cat ever, a genuine brand rather than a passing macro. Tardar Sauce died in May 2019, prompting widespread mourning; the frown remains instantly recognizable and now anchors a Solana coin from 2024.
