This article is about the internet meme. For the original Solana memecoin, see LMAO! ($LMAO).

LMAO LMAO, short for "laughing my ass off," is one of the oldest and most widely used pieces of internet slang, a text-based way of signaling that something is genuinely hilarious. In October 2025 the acronym was minted as a Solana memecoin, $LMAO, turning decades of typed laughter into a community token.

Layer 1 · The Lore

Origin

"LMAO" grew out of early text-based internet culture in the late 1980s and 1990s, when chatrooms, bulletin boards, and instant messaging pushed people to abbreviate everything they typed. It sits in the same family as LOL ("laughing out loud") and ROFL ("rolling on the floor laughing"). One of the earliest recorded uses appears in a 1990 online Dungeons & Dragons session, and an earlier cousin, LMTO ("laughing my tush off"), circulated on the FidoNet network before that. The spelled-out phrase is far older still, with a famous example appearing in J.D. Salinger’s 1951 novel "The Catcher in the Rye."

Spread

Through the 2000s, LMAO spread from IRC, AIM, and AOL chatrooms onto Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter, becoming default shorthand for laughter across the English-speaking internet. It spawned the intensified variant LMFAO, which in turn lent its name to the chart-topping pop duo, and it settled into dictionaries and internet-culture references as a permanent fixture of online language. On October 18, 2025, the $LMAO token launched on Solana via pump.fun, framing itself as a coin built on pure internet humor rather than utility.

Legacy

LMAO is one of the handful of internet acronyms so common that most people no longer register it as slang at all. As a memecoin it joined a small wave of tokens built directly on the lexicon of online laughter, and $LMAO grew into a multi-million-dollar Solana community token while the phrase itself remains a load-bearing piece of everyday internet writing.
