OIIA OIIA (Spinning Cat)

Origin

The cat is real and the spinning is not. The source image comes from a 2019 post in the Facebook group "Cats On Catnip", featuring a rescue cat named Ethel who was photographed mid-loaf looking mildly unimpressed with existence. Someone took that photograph and turned it into a rotating GIF, which is the single laziest edit available in image software and also, it turns out, the most effective. The sound came from somewhere else entirely. The "oo ee a e a" vocal loop circulated independently as a sound effect, one of those audio clips that exists on the internet with no clear parent and no obvious purpose. On 12 April 2023 a Bilibili user did the only thing that needed doing and married the two, syncing the spin to the vocal loop. The video collected more than twelve million views in five months, which on Bilibili is the algorithmic equivalent of being struck by lightning while holding a winning lottery ticket. What makes the pairing work is that the audio has no rhythm you can predict and the spin has no beginning or end, so your brain keeps waiting for a resolution that never arrives. This is technically a description of a hypnotic induction. It is also technically a description of holding a memecoin.

From Bilibili it went where everything goes: TikTok, then YouTube Shorts, then the wider Anglophone internet, which discovered it roughly a year late and confidently assumed it had invented it. By 2024 the spinning cat had become a reusable component rather than a single video. Editors slowed the spin down, sped it up past the point of visual coherence, matched it to the beat of unrelated pop songs, and dropped it into gaming clips as a reaction shot. There is an entire subgenre where the cat spins fast enough to generate a tunnelling visual effect, which people watch for several minutes at a time and then cannot explain why. The format's real advantage is that it needs no translation. There is no text, no cultural reference, and no language in the audio, which is why it crossed from Chinese platforms to Western ones without losing anything on the way. Most memes lose their edges when they cross a border. This one has no edges. The crypto adaptation arrived on 30 September 2024 with OIIAOIIA on Solana, launched under the name "spinning cat" with the domain spinning.cat, which is an aggressively good domain. It landed during the peak of the 2024 Solana cat-coin arms race, competing against a field where every viral animal received a ticker within hours of trending.

Legacy

OIIA OIIA is a useful case study in why some memes survive and most do not. Ethel, for the record, was a rescue cat who never asked for any of this and has now been rendered in motion millions of times without ever having moved.
