This article is about the internet meme. For the original Solana memecoin, see Pepe on Solana ($PEPE).

Pepe the Frog the Frog is a green anthropomorphic frog character created by cartoonist Matt Furie, who debuted in his comic 'Boy's Club' in 2005. Defined by the catchphrase 'feels good man,' Pepe became one of the internet's most ubiquitous reaction images before being appropriated as an alt-right symbol during the 2016 U.S. election, prompting an Anti-Defamation League hate-symbol designation and a years-long legal and cultural reclamation effort by Furie. The character later lent its name and likeness to the PEPE memecoin, launched in 2023.

Layer 1 · The Lore

Origin

Pepe the Frog originated in Matt Furie's comic 'Boy's Club,' which Furie began posting as zine-style blog entries on Myspace in 2005 before it saw print publication. In the strip, Pepe is caught urinating with his pants pulled all the way down, and when a friend asks why, he replies 'feels good man', a line that became the character's signature catchphrase. The character is typically drawn as a laid-back green frog in a blue t-shirt, originally an apolitical, slacker-stoner figure.

Spread

Around 2008, a scanned page featuring the 'feels good man' panel was uploaded to 4chan's /b/ board, which became the meme's primary breeding ground. Pepe's popularity steadily grew across Myspace, Gaia Online, Tumblr, and 4chan, spawning endless emotional variants such as 'Sad Frog,' 'Smug Pepe,' and 'Feels Bad Man.' By 2015 he was among the most popular memes online, but from roughly 2015 onward the image was increasingly co-opted on 4chan and Twitter and juxtaposed with racist and anti-Semitic imagery, peaking during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.

Legacy

In 2016 the Anti-Defamation League added Pepe to its hate-symbol database (while noting most uses remained non-hateful), and that fall the ADL partnered with Furie on a #SavePepe campaign to reclaim the character. Furie pursued legal action against far-right figures and outlets, and in June 2019 secured a $15,000 settlement against Alex Jones's Infowars for unlicensed use of Pepe on far-right posters. Pepe later re-entered the spotlight in 2023 when the unaffiliated ERC-20 PEPE memecoin launched on April 14, 2023, surpassing a $1 billion market cap within about three weeks and peaking near $1.6 billion.
