This article is about the internet meme. For the original Solana memecoin, see RETURN TO MEMES ($RTM).

Return to Memes to Memes is what crypto says to itself after it gets caught being serious. The phrase was posted as three lowercase words by the trader kmoney at 21:48 UTC on 16 February 2025, two days after the LIBRA token promoted by Argentina's president collapsed and took roughly 251 million dollars of retail money with it. Thirty seconds after the post, someone minted a token off the screenshot. Ninety six seconds after the post, someone else minted a second one. The first mint, 3d1qHSAkQhoN7kN1C6tvpAArCkXWxwYdBng6taXCDM6u, then did nothing at all for seven months, bonded in September 2025, sank to a twenty six thousand dollar chart in June 2026 and ran roughly 174 times off that low in nine days to a peak near 4.8 million dollars on 4 July 2026. The slogan is a plea for a simpler market, and the market answered it in the most literal way available, by turning the plea itself into a ticker and then cloning it eight more times.

Layer 1 · The Lore

Origin

The setup was the LIBRA affair. On 14 February 2025 Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, posted about a Solana token called LIBRA, the price went vertical and then vanished the same evening. Research later cited by CoinDesk on 20 February 2025 put the destroyed investor wealth at about 251 million dollars, with the overwhelming majority of traders losing money and a small set of insider wallets taking out tens of millions. For a week afterwards crypto Twitter argued about whether memecoins were finished, whether presidents should be allowed near a launchpad, and whether anything on the timeline had been organic since 2021. On 16 February 2025 at 21:48:22 UTC, the trader kmoney (@kmoney_69) posted an image captioned "return to memes". Three words, no thread, no manifesto. X records roughly 108,900 views and about 1,500 reposts on it. It was the shortest available way to say that the problem was never the dog pictures, it was everything bolted onto them: the political launches, the insider allocations, the venture-backed narratives wearing a meme costume. The market read it as a build order. Pump.fun records the mint 3d1qHSAkQhoN7kN1C6tvpAArCkXWxwYdBng6taXCDM6u created at 21:48:52 UTC, thirty seconds after the post, with the token's own social link pointing straight at the photo in kmoney's tweet. A second RTM, 6WX6ngYKcPhmXKqooZFx3GQVsLpGoBU1RE4tCqKJpump, was created at 21:49:58 UTC by a different wallet, citing the same tweet. Two strangers watched the same three words and reached for the same launch button barely a minute apart, which is either the fastest cultural transmission ever measured or precisely the behaviour the slogan was complaining about, depending on how charitable you feel.

Spread

Nothing happened next, which is the interesting part. The first mint sat unfinished on its bonding curve through the spring and summer of 2025 while the phrase kept getting reused every time a celebrity coin blew up. More RTM contracts appeared anyway: one on 15 May 2025 that hit pump.fun's king of the hill six minutes after minting and is now worth about three thousand dollars, and several more through 2026. The original only completed its curve on 16 September 2025, seven months after it was created, and its PumpSwap pool was opened on 25 September 2025. It then spent the winter as a sub-ten-thousand-dollar chart. CoinGecko records its all-time low at 0.00002770 dollars on 25 June 2026, which values the most on-the-nose ticker in the entire market at roughly twenty six thousand dollars. Then it ran. From that June low the price reached 0.004819 dollars on 4 July 2026, about 174 times off the bottom, for a peak market value near 4.8 million dollars, and the pool's own daily candles show an intraday high near 0.005387 dollars on roughly 1.5 million dollars of volume that day. A second, smaller spike arrived on 17 August 2026 with an intraday high near 0.00194 dollars and about 1.4 million dollars of volume in a single day, followed by a fall of more than eighty percent inside a week. Crypto had discovered that the cure for narrative coins is a narrative coin.

Legacy

The joke has a defence mechanism built in, which is that you cannot buy purity without impurifying it, and everyone involved knows this. It has slowed nobody down. The 17 August 2026 spike was followed within seventy two hours by at least eight fresh RTM contracts across Solana, BNB Chain, Base and Robinhood Chain, most of them holding two to four thousand dollars and no story. One of them, 7gmEuYPiVoVicYyKjDRW8DfLMyBvkPJFqQ5YnYV6Y7HZ, displays a market capitalisation of about 1.44 billion dollars and 57.6 million dollars of liquidity, both of which dissolve on inspection: the pool is forty billion of its own tokens sitting against 1,034 dollars of real USDC, and it traded 2.78 dollars in twenty four hours. It is a billion dollar sign hung on a lemonade stand, and it is the best available illustration of what the slogan was objecting to. The canonical contract is not innocent either. CoinGecko carries a Rugcheck warning about token concentration in unidentified wallets, and the chart is a two-spike affair rather than a community. What survives is the phrase. Every cycle produces a scandal, every scandal produces someone typing return to memes, and now every one of those posts has a contract address underneath it within a minute. The receipt for this one is unusually clean: thirty seconds from the tweet to the mint, and sixty six seconds to the copy.

The Chain Trail

The OG token for this meme is RETURN TO MEMES ($RTM) on Solana, launched 2025-02.

Key facts

  • The phrase was posted by the trader kmoney (@kmoney_69) at 21:48:22 UTC on 16 February 2025 as the three-word caption "return to memes", with roughly 108,900 views and about 1,500 reposts recorded on X.
  • It landed two days after the LIBRA collapse of 14 February 2025, which research cited by CoinDesk on 20 February 2025 valued at about 251 million dollars of destroyed investor wealth.
  • Pump.fun records mint 3d1qHSAkQhoN7kN1C6tvpAArCkXWxwYdBng6taXCDM6u created at 21:48:52 UTC, thirty seconds after the post, with the tweet itself as the token's social link.
  • A second RTM, 6WX6ngYKcPhmXKqooZFx3GQVsLpGoBU1RE4tCqKJpump, was created by a different wallet at 21:49:58 UTC citing the same tweet, which makes the first mint provably first by sixty six seconds. The second now sits at zero liquidity.
  • The first mint did not finish its bonding curve until 16 September 2025, and its PumpSwap pool EBNUexqpB5WjKXJsfm3ruFt7zb7ZbXHZGR7YdhYuvuyy was opened on 25 September 2025.
  • CoinGecko records an all-time low of 0.00002770 dollars on 25 June 2026 and an all-time high of 0.004819 dollars on 4 July 2026, a rise of roughly 174 times in nine days to a peak value near 4.8 million dollars.
  • A second spike on 17 August 2026 reached an intraday high near 0.00194 dollars on about 1.4 million dollars of volume, then gave back more than eighty percent within the week.
  • At least eight further RTM contracts were minted across Solana, BNB Chain, Base and Robinhood Chain between 16 and 19 August 2026, riding that spike.
  • The largest of those copies, 7gmEuYPiVoVicYyKjDRW8DfLMyBvkPJFqQ5YnYV6Y7HZ, shows about 1.44 billion dollars of market capitalisation and 57.6 million dollars of liquidity that consists of forty billion of its own tokens against 1,034 dollars of USDC, on 2.78 dollars of daily volume.
  • CoinGecko displays a Rugcheck warning of possible market manipulation on the canonical contract, citing token concentration in unidentified wallets.
