Rickroll
Rickroll bait-and-switch prank where a link promised to lead somewhere useful instead dumps the viewer into the music video for Rick Astley's 1987 single "Never Gonna Give You Up."
Origin
The gag grew out of 4chan in 2007, mutating an earlier "duckroll" trick. Instead of a picture of a duck on wheels, pranksters swapped in Astley's impossibly earnest synth-pop video, and the term "Rickroll" stuck almost overnight.
Spread
It jumped from imageboards to the wider web fast, peaking when Rick Astley himself surprised the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2008 by rickrolling a live national audience. YouTube leaned in on April Fools' Day 2008 by routing every featured video on its homepage to the clip.
Legacy
Nearly two decades later the prank refuses to die, resurfacing in QR codes, corporate tweets, and Zoom calls. Astley, once mildly bemused, has embraced it, re-recording and performing the song to crowds who came specifically to be rickrolled on purpose.
