Rika-chan (Doge Owner's Rescue Kitten)
Rika-chan (Doge Owner's Rescue Kitten) is a kitten Atsuko Sato found walking alone near a fish market. Atsuko Sato is the woman whose 2010 blog photographs of a Shiba Inu named Kabosu became Doge, which became Dogecoin, which became the founding document of every animal token that followed. That lineage is the entire story here. On 29 July 2026 Osso Magazine published an interview in which Sato said animal rescue and welfare advocacy had become the central mission of her life, and introduced her newest rescue by name. The internet, which has spent more than a decade turning her dog into a currency, immediately did the same thing to her cat. A contract called Rikacoin appeared on Solana three days after the interview carrying no image, no description and no website. The version anybody actually traded arrived on 21 August 2026 and moved roughly 3.7 million dollars across 144,000 trades in its first twelve hours. Sato has no connection to any of it. She had already said as much a month earlier, about a different cat token that used one of her Instagram posts without asking.
Origin
The source document is a press release, which is a strange place for a meme to start and exactly the right place for this one. ACCESS Newswire published it at 12:35 on 29 July 2026 under an Osso Magazine byline with a Flushing, New York dateline, titled "Atsuko Sato, Owner of Internet Icon Kabosu, Rescues Abandoned Kitten and Renews Global Call for Animal Adoption." In it Sato describes finding a kitten walking alone near a local fish market, bringing her to safety, and naming her Rika-chan. The photograph filed with the release is captioned as Rika-chan wrapped in a towel shortly after being found. Two quotes carry the piece: "Our animals give us unconditional love. They ask for very little, yet they give us so much every single day," and, closing it out, "I will never stop fighting for animals' rights." There is no token in the release, no contract address, no ticker and no cryptocurrency of any kind anywhere in it. It is an animal welfare interview. What gives it detonation potential is who is speaking. Kabosu was born around 2 November 2005 and was bred by a puppy mill that later shut down, which sent her to an animal shelter. Sato, a kindergarten teacher, adopted her in 2008. A photograph from a 2010 post on Sato's blog, showing Kabosu side-eyeing the camera with her paws crossed, was reposted with Comic Sans captions on the Tumblr blog Shiba Confessions and became Doge. Dogecoin followed in December 2013. Kabosu died at 7:50 in the morning JST on 24 May 2024 in Sakura, Chiba, aged eighteen, of leukemia, having spent roughly half her life as the most recognisable dog on earth without her owner ever selling a pixel of her. Sato has been through this before, and specifically with cats. Tsutsuji, one of the cats who shared the house with Kabosu, already carries her own contested cluster of Ethereum contracts and her own Memepedia entry. So by July 2026 the pattern was fully established and entirely one-directional: Sato posts an animal, strangers mint the animal. Rika-chan is the newest name to enter that machine and by some distance the fastest to be processed by it.
Spread
The pre-history matters, because Rikacoin did not arrive in a vacuum. On 26 July 2026 at 16:24:38 UTC, three days before the Osso Magazine interview went out, a Solana contract called Catecoin was minted at Ai66LHZG9MCzg1WKdawwqduVAXpNDUuV8M3uyq5ppump. It sat flat until Sato's account @kabosumama posted a video of a kitten, at which point it ran roughly 230 times in a single day. Coverage put the peak somewhere between 9.5 and 11 million dollars of market capitalisation before it settled back toward 4.5 to 7 million. BSCN reported the cooldown at 04:49 UTC on 29 July 2026. Fifty five minutes later, at 05:44 UTC, the same outlet reported the other half of the story: Sato said she had no ties to CATE token projects and that an Instagram post of hers had been used without permission to falsely imply her involvement. Catecoin's own website tells a "Ninth Life" story about a cat succeeding a dog and never mentions Sato, Kabosu or Rika at all. Checked on 21 August 2026 it holds roughly 36 million dollars of market capitalisation on about 1.45 million dollars of liquidity, which makes it the largest thing in this orbit and the one furthest from the actual cat. The Rika name itself was squatted first. Pump.fun records a mint called Rikacoin, ticker RIKA, at 3hNKkJhWWucvKhG3CYEuEnjSgYQpKdRNhnj75tytpump, created at 16:12:31 UTC on 1 August 2026, three days after the press release. It has no image, no description, no Twitter, no Telegram and no site, and it currently sits at about 1,920 dollars of market capitalisation on 2,135 dollars of liquidity. Somebody read the wire copy, typed the name into a launchpad, and then did nothing for twenty days. The contract that became the market is GiAXHqgpNXcjMTRVDvUk2kr4ZnARePn8Zg7nCTTZpump, minted at 00:27:17 UTC on 21 August 2026 with the press release's own headline pasted into its on-chain description field and a syndication of that release filed as its website. Its PumpSwap pool is myCtbntg5RyEgzrqi6URsVCXDMCrS1QWBde4UQYrjoq. GeckoTerminal puts the high at 0.00161191 dollars at 03:05 UTC the same morning, roughly two and a half hours after launch, which against the one billion supply implies a peak near 1.61 million dollars. Checked at 12:40 UTC on 21 August 2026 it holds about 409,000 dollars of market capitalisation on roughly 55,700 dollars of liquidity, with some 3.69 million dollars of 24 hour volume across 144,350 trades. Its site is rikacoin.xyz, its account is @RikacoinSOL, and at the time of checking the site's own contract field still read "coming soon," which is a useful reminder that a project's website is not a source and the mint is. The copies landed the same day and in the same shape as every recent clone wave. Robinhood Chain produced Rikacoin contracts at 0xe452E1629E4Dc2EF1F858E9F039828Fcd45293c2 and 0xC9b71Ae05f55aC624EFdf317a16016Aa8ba60740 alongside a run of vanity addresses ending in 7777. BNB Chain produced two more of the 7777 series. Solana produced a second Rikacoin on the Bonk launchpad at HKf9paYQxWTQrRzK7d7fCm8PrhKPP7V2DDFDLmYsbonk holding around 26,000 dollars, plus a dust mint at 9wYEtv1vtLKWFfWYnhXg7imxtpLyNfNwWZn2ARziYW9s quoting twenty dollars. None of them has a community, a site, or a claim worth checking. All of them have the kitten's face.
Legacy
The useful thing this episode documents is how short the fuse has become at the front end. What is new here is not the speed, it is the source. This did not start on X or TikTok. It started on a press wire, filed out of a Queens address by a magazine most readers had never heard of, and the launchpads read it anyway. The name was squatted within three days of the filing and had a real book within twenty three. Anything with a name and a photograph is now upstream of a bonding curve, including a corporate newswire item about animal adoption. The other thing worth preserving is Sato's position, because it is documented and it has not moved. She has been public about animal welfare for years, she never sold Kabosu, and on 29 July 2026 she stated flatly that she had no ties to the CATE tokens then trading on her cat footage and that her Instagram had been used without permission to suggest otherwise. Nothing published since connects her to Rikacoin in any direction. Memepedia therefore treats every token in this entry as unofficial. Rika-chan is a rescued kitten in Chiba. The tokens are strangers on the internet holding her picture, which is roughly what Doge was in 2013, except that in 2013 nobody had built the machinery to do it before lunch. Whether Rikacoin lasts is a separate question from whether it is real, and the honest answer to the first is that a token which peaked at 1.61 million dollars two and a half hours after launch and gave back three quarters of that by midday does not yet have a history. What it has is a paper trail: a dated interview, a dated denial about a different token, three dated mints and a clone swarm across four chains. That is enough to file. It is not enough to call anything the OG, and this entry does not.
