Slerf (SLERF)
“The developer burned ten million dollars by accident. The chart loved it.”
This article is about the internet meme. For the original Solana memecoin, see SLERF ($SLERF).
Slerf (SLERF) is a sloth-themed memecoin on the Solana blockchain that became infamous in March 2024 when its anonymous developer accidentally burned roughly $10 million in presale and airdrop tokens. The blunder, rather than killing the project, made it go viral and briefly drove its trading volume above that of all Ethereum-based exchanges.
Origin
Slerf launched in March 2024 on Solana as a presale memecoin centered on a sloth mascot, raising approximately 53,000 SOL (about $10 million) from investors. On March 18, 2024, the project's anonymous developer, known as 'Grumpy,' was burning the liquidity pool when, in their words, 'a simple mindless misclick' also destroyed the tokens reserved for the presale and airdrop. Because the mint authority had already been revoked, the burned tokens could not be re-minted.
Spread
Paradoxically, the catastrophe became the marketing. The story of a developer torching $10 million spread rapidly across Crypto Twitter and crypto media, and traders piled in out of morbid curiosity and meme solidarity. After listing on Solana venues such as Jupiter and Orca, SLERF surged from a few cents to as high as roughly $1.40 within hours, a gain of more than 3,700%. CoinDesk reported the token notched about $1.7 billion in trading volume in its first day.
Legacy
Slerf became a defining cautionary-tale-turned-success of the 2024 Solana memecoin mania, frequently cited alongside WIF, BOME, and PONKE as emblematic of the era's irrational exuberance. In a notable coda, in October 2025 the project announced it had completed roughly $10 million in refunds to affected presale investors, funded over about 19 months through trading fees, donations, and ecosystem revenue.
