Tom the Lizard

Fast Review
From Memepedia, the official encyclopedia of memes
Case status:Origin DisputedMore than one token claims to be the first. The receipts decide.

Tom the Lizard is a small green lizard who sits alone in the dark tapping the lizard emoji into a phone while a robotic voice reads it back to him. Forever. He was made by Pixar as a throwaway post credits teaser attached to Elio in June 2025, Disney executives initially found the idea creepy, and within weeks he was the most quoted thing in the film he was not in. Disney later put the meme's reach at roughly 316 million views. He got a Fortnite skin, photobombed ESPN's Super Bowl coverage, and Hoppers, the film he actually belongs to, opened in March 2026 and took about 390 million dollars worldwide. The token situation is the exact opposite of that success story: at least nine lizard mints, none officially anything, and one displaying a fake 351 million dollar market cap out of a pool holding a thousand dollars.

Layer 1 · The Lore

Origin

Hoppers was announced at the D23 Expo in August 2024. Tom is a minor character in it, voiced by Tom Law, a Pixar employee rather than a name actor, which is the sort of casting decision studios make when nobody expects the character to matter. The teaser came from story artist Hannah Roman. Director Daniel Chong has described Disney's first reaction as hesitant, calling the idea a little bit eerie and a little creepy, and producer Nicole Paradis Grindle is credited with keeping it alive after that. Martha Morrison suggested attaching it to Elio. So it ran after the closing credits of Elio, which opened in the United States on 20 June 2025: a green gecko in the dark, pressing the lizard emoji over and over, a synthetic voice saying lizard with every tap, and nothing else. It was a joke about how phones feel. That was enough.

Spread

Nobody had a clean copy, so people filmed the cinema screen. Bootleg recordings of the post credits scene went up the same weekend, including one from the YouTube channel The Pixar Nerd on 20 June 2025, and the audio, lizard lizard lizard lizard, became the payload. The format hardened on 27 July 2025 when TikTok user @igreenscreenthings published a green screen template, which turned a forty second gag into a remixable asset anyone could paste into their own scenario. Pixar publicly confirmed the character's name as Tom in August 2025. From there it stopped behaving like a meme and started behaving like a marketing department. A Tom Lizard skin arrived in Fortnite on 5 February 2026. He photobombed ESPN's coverage of Super Bowl LX. Disney's own figure for meme views connected to the character is around 316 million. Hoppers opened on 6 March 2026 and grossed about 389.7 million dollars worldwide, 166 million domestic and 223.7 million international, off a 46.3 million dollar domestic opening weekend, with the lizard doing a meaningful share of the promotion for free. The tokens tracked the meme with a delay and no coordination. The earliest Solana mint called Tom The Lizard, 3eUepXgUs4RWiKDo64DuPrwm2s8epFej68bQoUC4pump, started trading on 6 August 2025, right after Pixar named him, and is now dead with no liquidity. More arrived in 2026: another on 3 August, another on 18 August, a BSC version in March, and a swarm of generic lizard mints on Robinhood's chain through July.

Legacy

Tom is the cleanest recent case of a studio accidentally making a meme and then being smart enough not to fight it. Disney's instinct was that the scene was creepy. The internet's response was that creepy was the point, because a small animal compulsively tapping a screen in the dark is not a joke about lizards. Pixar kept it, named him, put him in Fortnite, and let him carry a chunk of the campaign for a film that then made about 390 million dollars. On chain, Tom is a case study in why an enormous meme does not produce an obvious coin. Nine or more mints share the name across Solana, BSC, HyperEVM and Robinhood's chain, none has any connection to Disney or Pixar, and the biggest number on the board is fake. The token at 6BWaFbMb2M81wZz5Dx1yzmBooft7M5bgcmK2JaRhAGU4 shows roughly 351 million dollars of market capitalisation from one Orca pool opened at 22:38:36 UTC on 22 August 2026. That pool holds 3,997,028,032 tokens against 1,043 dollars of USDC, the mint has a supply of one trillion, and it traded 3.10 dollars in twenty four hours across four sells and zero buys. The price is whatever the last seller decided it was. The one actually trading is LIZARD at 2hXHY3DnN7HUGySZEmBsLFKSqLB8nj3aE8wwq44wpump, a pump.fun launch whose market opened at 23:03:50 UTC on 21 August 2026, with a website and an X account and roughly 145,000 dollars of market capitalisation on about 33,000 dollars of liquidity. It is small, it is unofficial, and it is real, which in this particular name is a three out of three.
