Unstable Coin
This article is about the internet meme. For the original Solana memecoin, see unstable coin ($USDUC).
Unstable Coin Coin is the joke that a stablecoin is a promise nobody can keep, so you may as well sell the opposite. USDUC is a token whose entire product is that it does not hold a peg, marketed at people who want the thrill rather than the safety, and its launch note said the quiet part out loud: buy it before bed and find out in the morning whether you are a millionaire or a hobo. It was minted on pump.fun on 18 May 2025, abandoned by its creator inside a week, adopted twice by strangers, bridged to four more chains, listed on Kraken, and it is still trading. It is one of the few memecoins where the premise, the collapse and the survival are all the same bit.
Origin
The contract CB9dDufT3ZuQXqqSfa1c5kY935TEreyBw9XJXxHKpump was created on pump.fun at 22:14 UTC on 18 May 2025 by the wallet AZsHL8kYsCqmsnidpDUWTJ2x5RgSYXaJpn7YPhK1eCRU, with a supply of just under one billion and a description that is still attached to the mint today: "unstable coin, u buy it before u go to sleep and don't know if'll be millionaire or hobo by the time u wake up." Ten minutes later, at 22:24 UTC, the PumpSwap pool BAX9M9a5FVy5cNiewwnuwkVDzhSg9psZnb4fJ9r677tN opened and the thing was tradeable. The timing is the joke. May 2025 was the middle of the stablecoin land grab, when every treasury desk, fintech and bank pilot was announcing a dollar token and the industry's marketing word of the year was "stability." USDUC took the naming convention of that entire category, the USD prefix that is supposed to signal a peg, and attached it to a thing with no peg, no reserves, no attestation and no intention of ever having any. The ticker reads like a stablecoin and behaves like a coin flip. There is no whitepaper claim to argue with because the project states it has no value, no team obligation and no roadmap. What happened next is the second half of the origin story. The creator sold and walked away inside the first week. On 6 June 2025 an outside account formally claimed the token through pump.fun's community-takeover process. That claimant later vanished too, and on 3 December 2025 a second community takeover was recorded against the same mint. A token about instability was, by then, on its third set of hands.
Spread
It found its audience because it was legible in one glance to anyone already annoyed by the stablecoin discourse, and because holding it was itself the punchline. The X community set up around the ticker grew past twenty thousand members, and the account @usduc_official has posted well over a thousand times since registering in October 2025, which is unusual persistence for a coin whose founder left in week one. The token then did the thing the joke should have made impossible: it built infrastructure. Bridges put USDUC on Ethereum and Base at 0xecedb6f8108b9f7bbf499da843dced6c2bb6e270, and later on the Robinhood chain and HyperEVM, so the anti-stablecoin became omnichain in the same style as the real ones it parodies. Kraken published a USDUC document dated 14 July 2025 and lists the token to this day. In April 2026 a self-described "Unstable Finance v0.1" put staking vaults on Kamino, where the yield was funded out of pump.fun creator fees rather than out of anything resembling a reserve. Every one of those steps is a straight-faced imitation of stablecoin plumbing bolted onto an asset that promises the opposite outcome. The price did what the name advertised. CoinGecko records the all-time high at $0.074542 on 1 September 2025, which against the roughly 999.9 million supply is a market capitalisation near 74 million dollars. It has spent most of the time since well below that. CoinMarketCap's data summary attributes a further violent move to a listing on 7 May 2026, a near ten-fold intraday run to about 29 million dollars of market cap followed by roughly a 50 percent retracement within the same session.
Legacy
USDUC is the clearest example of a memecoin whose thesis is a critique. Terra's UST depegged in May 2022 and took forty billion dollars of value with it while insisting to the last that it was stable; USDUC starts from the position that the label was never worth anything and charges you nothing for the disclosure. It is closer to performance art than to a trade, and it is honest in a way most of its serious counterparts are not, because it can only fail at something it never claimed to do. The survival is what makes it worth documenting rather than the peak. Two abandonments, two community takeovers, four bridge deployments, a centralised exchange listing and a staking product later, it was still holding roughly 2.9 million dollars of market cap on about 389,000 dollars of liquidity in August 2026, more than fifteen months after the wallet that made it stopped caring. Most tokens whose creator exits in week one are gone in a month. This one turned the abandonment into part of the bit.
