Origin

The photograph is a still from Pejzazi u magli (Foggy Landscapes), a 1984 Serbian film directed by Jovan Jovanovic, in which a black Labrador appears with a telephone receiver about two minutes and fifteen seconds in. Nothing in the film explains why the internet wanted this. The earliest known posting of the still as an image macro came from the Tumblr blog VivaDixies on 2 October 2011, captioned Yes, This is Dog. Two days later, on 4 October, it was reposted to Reddit's r/funny under the title It's for you, boy and passed 20,000 upvotes on the front page. The caption that actually stuck arrived on 30 October 2011, when the Reddit user shivs4kids paired the format with a picture of Duane Dog Chapman, the reality-television bounty hunter, under the line Hello? Yes, This is Dog. That version took more than 6,000 upvotes over six weeks and fixed the wording for everyone who came after it.

The joke needed no setup at all: a phone, an animal, and a species that answers to its own name. In early November 2011 a Canvas user posting as idontlikewords put up another variation that produced several dozen derivatives within days, and the format opened out to every other animal, giving Hello Yes This Is Horse, Duck, Cat, Bee, Spider, Bunny and Bear. On 24 November 2011 the YouTube channel MrWeebl published Telephone Dog, an animation by the Something Awful artist Shmorky, which gave the still a voice. The humour site Smosh ran a compilation on 12 December 2011, a Facebook fan page had collected 753 likes by 14 December, and by mid-2012 a French-language version was circulating as Allo Ui Cer Chien. It also crossed with the other formats of its era, absorbing Matrix references, Lionel Richie lyrics and the Yo Dawg construction.

Legacy

This is one of the small number of 2011 image macros that never really went away, because it stopped being a meme and became a reflex: the line still turns up any time an animal is photographed near a telephone. Its market history is much shorter and considerably stranger. A pump.fun contract carrying the name HelloYesThisIsDog and the description Hello Yes this is dog speaking was minted on 4 April 2024 and then did nothing whatsoever for two years and four months, never completing its bonding curve. It graduated to a PumpSwap pool at 01:14 UTC on 1 August 2026. Within the next three and a quarter hours a second Solana contract with the identical name and ticker appeared, and at least six mirrors were deployed on Robinhood Chain sharing a 7777 vanity address suffix, several of which now report a larger market cap than the contract that got there more than two years earlier. Nobody connected to the 1984 film, the dog in it, or Duane Chapman has any involvement in any of this.
