Doge 2 / Caesar
“The sequel nobody greenlit, deleted by the mods, then canonised anyway.”
Doge 2 / Caesar 10 May 2020 somebody on Twitter said they were in a sad mood and asked for pet pictures. A user replied two hours late with a photo of their dog, a squinting, side eyed, faintly smug animal called Caesar. The original poster quote tweeted it with five words that turned a pet into a sequel: "Doge 2 has been officially released." The joke worked because Doge, the 2010 Kabosu photograph, had spent a decade as the single canonical funny dog face of the internet, and here was a rival with the same energy and no permission. The quote tweet took 25,400 retweets and 140,500 likes inside a day, and the largest Doge communities online spent that day behaving exactly like a religion handling an unauthorised prophet. Six years later, on 22 August 2026, a wallet minted the joke on Solana and the ticker briefly cleared 1.3 million dollars of market capitalisation before losing half of it in a session.
Origin
The meme is one reply and one quote tweet, both on 10 May 2020. The account @Pogsire, which also posts under the handle @Dogesire, tweeted "I'm in a sad mood, send pet pics." The account @ourbravestoy answered "I'm 2 hours late but here's Caesar" with a photograph of their dog. Screenshots of the exchange that circulated on iFunny and elsewhere carry a client stamp of 3:06 AM on 10 May 2020 from Twitter for Android. @Pogsire then quote tweeted the reply with the line that named the meme, "Doge 2 has been officially released," and that quote tweet is the object everybody actually shared. Know Your Meme, which documented the entry as Confirmed and files it under 2020 as an Animal, Character and Exploitable with a sensitive content badge, records over 25,400 retweets and 140,500 likes on it within one day. The dog's name is Caesar. Beyond the owner's handle, almost nothing about him is public: no breed statement, no location, no follow up press. That absence is unusual for a dog that became a recurring character, and it matters for the coins that arrived later, because there is no owner statement anywhere confirming involvement with any of them. What made the photo work was not the dog's biography, it was the face. Caesar's expression sits in the same uncanny middle distance as Kabosu's, knowing rather than goofy, and the internet reads that as a personality.
Spread
The fight started immediately, and the fight is the story. On the same day, a post carrying the meme to r/okbuddyretard collected over 37,100 upvotes, which is the number that tells you this went past Twitter. The Doge purists went the other way. On r/dogelore, the subreddit that had spent years building a formal internal canon around the original dog, a post by the user _omg_ reached over 6,500 upvotes before moderators removed it, and a second by Zioxilluminaty was killed at around 410. The moderators issued an announcement restricting posts to high effort memes, which in practice meant a cull of Doge 2 submissions. Facebook's Doge Collection ran its own crackdown. For roughly a day, one of the internet's oldest meme institutions was actively deleting a dog. The suppression did what suppression always does. Fan art appeared within hours, including a drawing by @matchiitea that took over 670 retweets and 5,600 likes. Then the canon simply absorbed him. On r/dogelore Caesar settled in as a side character rather than a usurper, written as the laid back, sociable one against Doge's more highly strung register, and a female counterpart named Clara was introduced into the lore alongside him. Later community artwork pushed the bit further, including a Four Dogs of the Apocalypse composition that treats the dog roster as a pantheon. The succession crisis resolved into a cast list.
Legacy
Doge 2 is a rare case of a meme that got its canon settled six years before it got its ticker, which makes the on chain record unusually easy to read. The first Solana contracts arrived in 2024, four years after the tweet, and none of them worked. A token called doge 2 with the ticker CAESAR was created at 22:01:53 UTC on 24 May 2024 at 8yh22HFNVL2D4SqLc4A1HTJErKrD6vScaasyweESthth, with a site at caesardog.com, an X account at @caesardoge2, and a description that paraphrased the meme's own encyclopedia entry. CAESAR DOGE 2 followed at 18:55:02 UTC on 23 September 2024 at 7BhEnpJzeuBjYSFnaRqCfy93hL3DJuUYXKRZmZT5pump, describing itself as OG DOGE LORE and pointing both its website and Twitter metadata fields at the same encyclopedia page. A third, plain Doge2 at 93jD1i1hmccXZsYT6UUYDuGFyTBtEcJfYSBmV5tuthrH, was created at 19:47:47 UTC on 14 November 2024. Checked on 23 August 2026, all three sit between roughly 2,300 and 3,600 dollars of market capitalisation. They are the receipts, not the market. The market came on 22 August 2026, and it came without a reason anybody has been able to point at. There was no new Caesar photograph, no owner interview, no death announcement, no anniversary. What there was, at 03:02:41 UTC, was a mint at EjAuFtMEP6LQDgLb11JU9bkcskhFYbgd9Q5NRXJppump whose entire on chain description reads "(fees to owner)" and whose website field is not a website but the meme's encyclopedia entry. Its pool opened at 05:00:22 UTC and the price peaked in the 10:00 UTC hour, around seven hours after the mint, at 0.0013990837 dollars, which against a supply of 963,657,489 tokens is close to 1.35 million dollars. At least fifteen further contracts carrying the same name and ticker were minted across 22 and 23 August, almost all of them with no liquidity at all, plus a DOGE2 calling itself The New Doge. By 23 August the leader had given back 48 percent in a day on 2.1 million dollars of volume across 31,675 trades. So the meme's crypto history is a clean inversion of the usual pattern. The contracts that can prove they were early are worth nothing, and the contract that is worth something is two days old and cannot prove anything except that it read the same encyclopedia page as everybody else.
