Gasspas

Fast Review
From Memepedia, the official encyclopedia of memes
Case status:Origin DisputedMore than one token claims to be the first. The receipts decide.

Gasspas is a cat drawn by Matt Furie, the artist who made Pepe the Frog and then spent a decade watching the internet take him apart. The character first appeared in ZOGZ, a set of 111 original illustrations Furie released as NFTs in May 2023, and resurfaced two years later in previews of Cortex Vortex, a hand screenprinted book limited to about 110 signed copies, where he looms over a pair of rats like a landlord. Within days of those previews circulating, traders did the obvious arithmetic: new Furie character, unclaimed name, no contract. Two Ethereum tokens called Gasspas appeared three days apart in May 2025. The second one got the market, the exchanges and the coverage. The first one got there first. Neither has ever been endorsed by Furie.

Layer 1 · The Lore

Origin

ZOGZ is the actual origin and it is dated. In May 2023 Furie released 111 original character illustrations as an NFT collection, and Gasspas is one of the 111. That is where the name comes from, which matters, because it means the character is not a fan invention and the spelling is not up for debate. The revival came from Furie's editor, who posts as beuys_on_sale_ and shared previews of Cortex Vortex in May 2025. Cortex Vortex is a physical object rather than a franchise: a limited edition art book, hand screenprinted, roughly 110 signed and numbered copies, released late that month. In the previewed artwork Gasspas is drawn as a large psychedelic cat standing over two rats, cast as the antagonist to the rodent protagonist. Early crypto coverage called that rat Rato and built a whole rival token narrative on the name. Furie later clarified on Patreon that the rat is called Rusty, which is a very Furie way for a memecoin thesis to fall apart. So the receipts are: a character from a 2023 NFT set, a 2025 limited art book that put him back in circulation, and an artist who has said nothing about any of the tokens.

Spread

The token race started before most people had seen the book. The first Gasspas contract on Ethereum is 0xf56a4A9ae94aeE8F6e9BF737907389c94285AbE6, whose Uniswap pool opened at 06:19:47 UTC on 10 May 2025. It is now run by a community takeover account that calls itself @oggasspascto, which tells you how the fight went, and it holds about 8,200 dollars. The one that actually became Gasspas is 0x774eaF7A53471628768dc679dA945847d34b9a55, whose Uniswap pool opened at 19:14:59 UTC on 13 May 2025, three days and thirteen hours later. Its supply is 420,690,000,000,000, the standard Pepe numerology, with zero tax, burned liquidity and renounced ownership. It picked up the gasspas.vip site, the @GasspasCat account, CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap listings and a run of sponsored crypto press asking whether this was the next Furie breakout. CoinGecko records its all time high at 0.000000035274 dollars at 04:16:35 UTC on 10 June 2025, roughly 14.8 million dollars of market capitalisation against that supply. After that it did what small character tokens do, which is deflate slowly while the copies multiply. A Solana pump.fun GASSPAS appeared on 11 May 2025, a PulseChain version on 15 June 2025, a Base site at basedgasspas.com and a Sui project at gasspas.xyz advertising itself as the latest Matt Furie creation on Sui. Then on 25 August 2026 four separate Solana GASSPAS mints landed in a single day.

Legacy

Gasspas is the clearest working example of a specific 2025 trade: buy the character before the artist finishes the drawing. Pepe made Furie's back catalogue into a speculative asset class, so every new figure he sketches now gets a contract within hours of the first preview image, whether or not the character has done anything, said anything, or appeared in a book anyone can buy. Gasspas got a market before Cortex Vortex shipped its hundred and ten copies. The second lesson is about what winning means here. The token that came first is not the token that matters. Three days of head start counted for nothing against a better site, better tickers and a press push, and the original was left to a community takeover account whose handle is a complaint. Anyone insisting there is one true Gasspas contract is choosing between a corpse with seniority and a survivor without it. The third is the naming farce. A large slice of the early coverage confidently paired Gasspas against a rat called Rato, and the artist eventually pointed out that the rat is called Rusty. The tokens had already been named. Nobody renamed anything. None of the contracts on any chain has a documented endorsement from Matt Furie. Checked on 25 August 2026, the Ethereum token holds roughly 415,000 dollars of market capitalisation on about 163,000 dollars of liquidity in a single Uniswap pool, while a pump.fun mint launched that morning on Solana briefly carried nearly twice that.
