Kio the Lion

Origin

National Geographic confirmed the project on 26 March 2026, announcing a landmark series shot over four years by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit with Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 live-action The Lion King, as executive producer and Mike Gunton of Planet Earth II and Dynasties as creative director. That first announcement named no animals. It described a single pride and promised a premiere later in the year. The hero got a name on 24 and 25 June 2026, when the campaign released a poster carrying the tagline Rise Of A King and the logline The journey of a real lion king begins, and the coverage that followed identified the cub as Kio. The production numbers are the reason the series exists at all: 52 separate shoots in the Maasai Mara, close to 1,400 days in the field, described by National Geographic as the most time ever spent following one pride and the first natural history production to record a lion's complete passage from vulnerable cub to king. Favreau's summary of what they got is short and does not spoil anything: after tracking the lions in the field for four years, the pride never ceased to surprise us, and what Kio endures and eventually becomes is extraordinary. The name Kiongozi, Swahili for leader, is how the crypto side writes his name and it is a reasonable guess at what Kio is short for, but none of the National Geographic press material we could find uses it. In the official copy he is simply Kio.

The official trailer landed on 6 August 2026 and did exactly what a trailer about a small lion is supposed to do. Within a day the entertainment press had all filed the same story with different adjectives, from FirstShowing calling it adorable to Laughing Place, DapsMagic, EURweb, VitalThrills and the ABC owned and operated stations running the four-year, 1,400-day production line as the hook. The pitch writes itself and everybody used it: the man who made the animated lion king into a photoreal one went and found a real one. O.J. Lynch, who played Mufasa in The Lion King stage production, narrates, which means the voice telling you about an actual lion is a voice trained on a fictional one. Hans Zimmer, who scored the 1994 film, returns with Niccolo Pacella and Bleeding Fingers Music, so the soundtrack is a Lion King score attached to a documentary that is legally not a Lion King. The series premieres 19 August 2026 at 9pm ET on National Geographic in the United States and 20 August in the United Kingdom in two weekly double bills, with all four episodes streaming the next day on Disney+ and Hulu, and the soundtrack arriving 21 August through Hollywood Records.

Legacy

The receipts here are unusually clean, which is why this entry exists. On 24 June 2026 at 17:02:57 UTC an X account posted about the reveal. At 17:03:09 UTC, twelve seconds later, a pump.fun mint named Kiongozi | Rise Of A King was created on Solana with that post as its only link. Nothing then happened to it for six weeks. On 4 August 2026 at 14:02:44 UTC a different account posted again, and at 14:03:11 UTC, twenty-seven seconds later, a second Solana contract was minted, this one ticking KIO. That one bonded within half a minute and became the market: about 2.37 million dollars of volume across roughly 27,000 trades in a day, peaking near 2.04 million dollars of market cap on 6 August as the trailer circulated. The June contract finally got a liquidity pool on 4 August at 14:10 UTC, seven minutes after the August one opened, which is the tell. The oldest contract is provably the June one. The contract the market actually chose is the August one, and it is the only side with a website, kiosolana.com, which posts a blunt disclaimer that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by National Geographic, Disney or the filmmakers. Then came the usual weather. A Robinhood Chain mirror appeared twelve minutes after the August mint. On 5 and 6 August at least four more Solana contracts and a run of BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain addresses ending in 7777 were deployed under the same two names, one of them reporting 78 million dollars of liquidity out of a single pool, a number no pool of that size can produce. A documentary about who is really the king, and roughly a dozen contracts arguing the same question badly.
