Neil the Seal the Seal is a southern elephant seal from Tasmania, Australia, who became a global internet character for hauling himself into seaside towns and treating traffic cones, parked cars and road barriers as personal enemies. Fans adore him precisely because he behaves like an oblivious, road-blocking menace.
Origin
Neil is a real animal, born around October 2020 near Salem Bay on Tasmania's Tasman Peninsula and tagged by the state's Marine Conservation Program. His first viral moment came on 30 June 2022, when TikTok user @bigdaddyofdadjokes posted a clip of him shoving traffic cones around a road; that account kept documenting his antics as clips racked up tens of millions of views.

The meme exploded into global fame in December 2023. Fan edits gave the bellowing seal a gruff, entitled 'voice' narrating his crimes against cones and cars, and dedicated fan accounts pushed his TikTok following past a million. He became a recurring reaction and mascot figure across TikTok, Instagram and Twitter.
Legacy
Neil is one of very few elephant seals born in Tasmania in the last two decades and the only male routinely hauling ashore there, making him a genuine local rarity rather than a purely online invention. By 2026 he had grown to roughly one tonne, and Tasmanian officials publicly urged fans to keep their distance during his twice-yearly haul-outs, citing both public safety and the animal's welfare.
