Origin

On 7 July 2016 an anonymous user posted a thread on 4chan's /v/ board titled "Are You an NPC?", borrowing the video game term for non-player character: the townsfolk who stand in one spot repeating a single line forever while the actual protagonist walks past. The thread argued that some proportion of real people function the same way, following group consensus without ever generating an original thought. The idea sat around for two years without a face. Then in September 2018 it got one. On 7 September a grey-coloured Wojak variant appeared, stripped of the usual expressive squiggles that make Wojak look sad. On 10 September a viral comic by @SpookyStirnman crystallised the format, and the character was finished: featureless, grey, mouth slightly open, eyes pointing nowhere. The design is the argument. Regular Wojak is grey but visibly feels something. NPC Wojak has been sanded down until there is nothing left to read, which is the entire accusation rendered as a drawing.

Spread

NPC exploded through late 2018 as a political insult, primarily deployed by the online right against progressives, though the format is structurally neutral and got aimed in every direction eventually. Kotaku wrote about how the meme functions as a dehumanisation device, which is an unusually accurate reading: calling someone an NPC is not calling them wrong, it is calling them not a person. That is a meaningfully different move from ordinary internet insults, and it is why the meme drew coverage from the New York Times, the Verge and the BBC rather than being ignored as noise. The meme then did something almost nothing else in its category has managed: it changed sides. In 2023 the NPC streaming trend arrived on TikTok, where creators performed as literal video game NPCs, repeating short scripted phrases on loop in response to paid gifts from viewers. The most famous practitioners earned real money doing it. The insult had been converted into a job description, willingly, on camera, for tips. Crypto arrived in 2024. Non-Playable Coin launched on Ethereum with the NPC ticker and reached a real market capitalisation, later bridging to Solana via Wormhole where it still trades with meaningful liquidity. A separate Solana-native NPC token also exists. The meme about people who mindlessly follow the crowd became a speculative asset bought by people following the crowd, which is either irony or a business model.

Legacy

NPC Wojak is the sharpest thing the Wojak family ever produced, and the least comfortable. Most memes insult behaviour. This one insults the existence of an inner life, which is why it kept escaping the imageboards and landing in newspapers. It arrived at exactly the moment the internet needed a compact way to say "you are not thinking, you are repeating", and it has never gone out of service since. Its second act is the more interesting one. The NPC streaming trend of 2023 inverted the meme completely: the grey face stopped being something you called your enemies and became a costume people put on deliberately, monetised through a gifting economy. Very few memes survive being reclaimed by their own targets. This one did not just survive it, it got bigger. What remains is a permanently useful accusation and a permanently uncomfortable question. The meme only lands if you believe you are the player character, and the format quietly guarantees that everyone using it believes exactly that. Statistically, that cannot be true.
