Piper the Pygmy Hippo
This article is about the internet meme. For the original Solana memecoin, see Piper ($PIPER).
Piper the Pygmy Hippo is a pygmy hippo calf born at Edinburgh Zoo on 31 July 2026, weighing just under 5.5 kilos and making a noise her keepers compared to a bagpipe, which is how she got the name. She is Gloria's daughter, which makes her the little sister of Haggis, the 2024 calf who became Scotland's answer to Moo Deng. Her name was announced on the morning of 7 August 2026. The first Solana contract carrying it was minted at 08:49:14 UTC that day, and a second one arrived one second later.
Origin
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland announced that Gloria was expecting on Friday 31 July 2026, and the calf was born the same day, which the zoo's own write-up filed under the headline That was quick. Pygmy hippos are a small, secretive, endangered West African species, and every birth in a European collection is a genuine conservation event rather than a content opportunity, though it usually becomes both. The calf had to wait a week for a name, because pygmy hippo mothers are left alone with newborns and the first health check is what settles the sex. That check came on 7 August 2026, confirmed a female weighing just under 5.5 kilograms, and produced the name. Senior hoofstock keeper Jade Robertson explained the choice in one line that did most of the work of making her famous: she's like a little bagpipe, always making cute little huffs and puffs. Her mother Gloria has done this before. Gloria's previous calves include Amara and, in October 2024, Haggis, and her partner is Otto.
Spread
Piper arrived into a slot that already existed. In 2024 a pygmy hippo calf in Thailand called Moo Deng became one of the largest animal memes of the decade, and when Haggis was born at Edinburgh Zoo weeks later the coverage immediately framed him as the Scottish reply, complete with a Who deng headline and, per STV, an appearance on Saturday Night Live. Haggis moved to Wingham Wildlife Park in Kent in October 2025, which left the zoo without a resident baby hippo for exactly nine months. So the naming announcement on 7 August 2026 did not have to build an audience, it inherited one. The zoo posted Piper to Instagram that morning with an adoption appeal attached, STV published at 11:02 that morning, and the Edinburgh Evening News, the Scotsman and Midlothian View followed the same day. The bagpipe line was in every headline, because it is a very good line. Visitors were told they might see her the following week, depending on how mother and calf were doing.
Legacy
The gap between the announcement and the first contract is the shortest we have logged. The zoo's Instagram post went up on the morning of 7 August 2026, and at 08:49:14 UTC a pump.fun mint called PIPER was created on Solana with that exact Instagram link as its only reference. At 08:49:15 UTC, one second later, a second Solana mint appeared with the identical name and the identical link. The one-second loser never got a pool. The one-second winner bonded three seconds after minting and did about 1.35 million dollars of volume across more than 24,000 trades in its first hours, at roughly 197,000 dollars of market cap on 34,000 dollars of liquidity. After that it stopped being about a hippo. Two more Solana mints followed at 08:54 and 08:56, each pointing at a different X post instead of the zoo. Roughly twenty Robinhood Chain contracts named Piper, Baby Piper and Pipercoin were deployed between 08:49 and 10:38. Three Solana contracts reported market caps of 251 million, 199 million and 157 million dollars from single pools, and two of those three write their tickers with a right-to-left override character so that repiP renders on screen as Piper. A separate non-pump.fun Solana contract opened an Orca pool at 10:34 with 209,000 dollars of liquidity and no socials at all. In under two hours a week-old animal with no opinions had produced about thirty contracts, several of which are lying about their own names using characters that do not visibly exist.
