Poipoi
Poipoi is a male pygmy hippo calf announced by Zoo Santo Inácio in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal on 10 August 2026. He is the fifth calf of the same breeding pair, he belongs to a species with fewer than 2,400 animals left in the wild, and he became a Solana ticker in under two hours. The first Poipoi contract was minted at 11:33 UTC on the day of the announcement and never even finished its bonding curve. Four more followed over the next two days, and the one that finally caught a market was the fifth, which is a fair summary of how animal memes work now: the zoo writes the press release, the internet writes the ticker, and the animal continues to nap through both.
Origin
Zoo Santo Inácio sits in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro across from Porto. On 10 August 2026 it announced the birth of a pygmy hippo calf named Poipoi, the fifth offspring of its breeding pair Romina and Kibwana. Portuguese national media carried it the same day, including CNN Portugal, Observador, RTP and the English-language Portugal Resident, and Euronews followed on 13 August with the news that the calf could already be visited. Two details did the heavy lifting. The first is that the pygmy hippo, Choeropsis liberiensis, is one of the most threatened large mammals on earth, with fewer than 2,400 individuals estimated in the wild, and is managed in European zoos under the EAZA European Endangered Species Programme. The second is that Poipoi is male, and in this species only about one birth in ten is, which turns an ordinary calf into a genuinely useful entry in the studbook. Zoo director Teresa Guedes framed it plainly, saying each pygmy hippo birth is an important contribution to the future of the species. The zoo did not publish a birth date, only the announcement, so anyone dating this meme to the day should date it to 10 August 2026 and say so. Viewing was split by biology rather than by marketing: mother and calf in the outdoor habitat in the mornings, father Kibwana in the same space in the afternoons.
Spread
The template already existed. Moo Deng turned a pygmy hippo at Khao Kheow Open Zoo into a global character in 2024 and a Solana ticker shortly after, so by 2026 every zoo press release about a small hippo arrives pre-loaded with a market. Poipoi got his in 118 minutes. On-chain, checked on 16 August 2026, the sequence runs like this. The first contract, EAAyJR5RgNoGHSEDxCdi3nTtsdVzT6qXzgFkPfbHyGYL, was minted on pump.fun at 11:33:32 UTC on 10 August 2026 and pasted the Portugal Resident headline straight into its description. It never completed its bonding curve and holds no liquidity today, which makes it the earliest Poipoi token and also a tombstone. A second, 6SuZioL1n7FAozFMDYMpxDjUggD2SMLb721DJ2v6pump, arrived at 14:17:12 UTC the same day under the name The Pygmy Hippo and is still breathing on a few thousand dollars of liquidity. A third landed on 11 August at 21:09:51 UTC. A fourth, 6zM1N8cEgENQuz4gisVacCnmtt2nLviLvRDupTK7pump, was minted at 10:17:39 UTC on 12 August with the same one-line description and the same X account as the token that eventually won, and it now sits at zero liquidity, which reads like a first attempt being quietly abandoned an hour before the second. The fifth contract, 7z8Q8E4dpequE3XcxoXrpiCPiw1yVHZ7cY8EwT7Tpump, was minted at 11:19:07 UTC on 12 August 2026 and opened its PumpSwap pool at 12:33 UTC on 13 August. That one stuck. It peaked near 376,000 dollars of market capitalisation on 15 August 2026 and was still turning over roughly 287,000 dollars a day two days later, which for a three-day-old animal token is an actual market rather than a screenshot. Its website leans on the zoo's own livestream and on the argument that a pygmy hippo doing nothing on camera is better content than most of the timeline, while carrying an explicit disclaimer that it is not affiliated with Zoo Santo Inácio, EAZA or the IUCN. Then came the strip-mining. By 15 August there were tokens named ROMINA and Poipoi Mother after the calf's mother, plus a steady drip of same-name contracts with no liquidity at all. Naming the parent is the reliable sign that a meme has been fully processed.
Legacy
Poipoi is early and should be read as early. He is a real animal with real coverage in Portuguese and English media, a real conservation story, and a token market that is three days old at the time of writing and could be a rounding error by winter. What he already demonstrates is the compression: Moo Deng needed weeks of TikTok before anyone minted anything, while Poipoi went from press release to bonding curve in under two hours and from press release to a functioning market in three days. The first-mover lesson here is worth keeping. The earliest Poipoi contract is provably the one minted at 11:33 UTC on 10 August 2026, and it is worthless, because it never bonded. The contract with the market is the fifth one, minted two days later. Being first and being the meme are different jobs, and on Solana they are almost never done by the same wallet. Anyone buying a Poipoi ticker on the strength of the picture should check the mint, since at least half a dozen contracts share the name and most of them are empty. None of the tokens are connected to the zoo, and none of the trading volume funds the species. The hippo remains, as of 16 August 2026, unaware.
