Purple Pepe
“The frog repainted in Solana purple and run by a Facebook group.”
This article is about the internet meme. For the original Solana memecoin, see Purple Pepe ($PURPE).
Purple Pepe the Frog is green and lives on Ethereum. Purple is the colour of the Solana logo. That is the entire creative premise of Purple Pepe, and it has so far survived three years, a chain wide bear market, a community takeover and a 132 million dollar peak. The token was minted on 3 July 2023, sat with no market for almost a year, and only came alive when liquidity was finally added in June 2024. What lifted it was not a viral video but a Facebook group: the WallStreetBets community page, run by Christopher Berrios and counting more than half a million members, adopted the coin and ran it. Its slogan, Make Solana Great Again, tells you everything about the register. Its on chain description makes a bolder claim, that it was the first Pepe created on Solana, and that one does not survive contact with the block explorer.
Origin
The mint is dated. The token at HBoNJ5v8g71s2boRivrHnfSB5MVPLDHHyVjruPfhGkvL was created at 15:34:11 UTC on 3 July 2023 by the wallet 83yrwvqCLnCn8RFSzRQStmujprDAVHL8tBWy8FhBm5Qu, with a supply of 420,660,426,625.7 tokens at one decimal place. The 420,690 shape of that number is a direct copy of the Ethereum PEPE supply, which is the joke stated in arithmetic. This is not a pump.fun launch, since the mint predates that platform by about six months. It is a hand rolled SPL token from the quiet part of 2023. Then nothing happened for eleven and a half months. The oldest live market for the token is a Raydium pool at CpoYFgaNA6MJRuJSGeXu9mPdghmtwd5RvYesgej4Zofj, opened at 15:46:06 UTC on 15 June 2024. A token can exist on Solana without a price, and this one did, for the better part of a year. The project's own on chain description says "First Pepe created on Solana deployed July 2023." That claim is checkable and it fails. A Solana token simply called Pepe at F9CpWoyeBJfoRB8f2pBe2ZNPbPsEE76mWZWme3StsvHK has had a live market since 21 January 2023, five and a half months before Purple Pepe was minted, and its own community claims it predates Ethereum's PEPE. Purple Pepe is unambiguously the original Purple Pepe. It is not the first Pepe on Solana, and it should stop saying so.
Spread
The distribution channel here is the strangest thing about the entry, because it is not crypto Twitter. It is Facebook. The WallStreetBets community page, founded by Christopher Berrios and reported at over 560,000 members in May 2025 and over 580,000 later, took the token over and made it the group's project. Coverage of the run describes a community takeover during 2024, without a precise date, after which the original deployer stopped being the story and the group did the promotion, the site, the games and the web apps. Berrios had publicly called the original Pepe coin's run, and a membership that had watched that happen was willing to run the play again in purple. The result is documented in the price. The all time high on the token was 0.00031481 dollars on 25 November 2024 at 23:26 UTC, which against the fixed supply is roughly 132.4 million dollars of market capitalisation. The project rounds this to 140 million in its own materials. That peak lands squarely inside the November 2024 memecoin blowoff, and the on chain record agrees with the date: two new Meteora pools for the token were opened on 25 November 2024, the day of the top. After the peak it did what tokens do, and then it did something most of them do not, which is keep going. By May 2025 the community was reporting over 48,000 holders and listings across Poloniex, LBank, BitMart, Coinstash, Biconomy, Gate.io, the Slingshot app, Coinbase Wallet and Robinhood Wallet. As of 23 August 2026 the token is quoted on KCEX against USDT with more twenty four hour volume than its Solana pools carry, alongside Biconomy, and holds around 7.07 million dollars of market capitalisation on about 494,000 dollars of liquidity.
Legacy
Purple Pepe's contribution to the genre is not the art, which is Pepe in Solana purple, and it is not the slogan, which is a political catchphrase with the country swapped for a blockchain. It is the demonstration that a Facebook group can be a memecoin's distribution layer. Everything in crypto in 2024 assumed the funnel ran through X, Telegram and pump.fun. This one ran through a half million member Facebook page with a named founder, aimed at an audience that was largely not native to Solana and had to be walked onto it. That is a completely different acquisition channel to the one the rest of the market was fighting over, and for one November it outperformed most of them. The second contribution is the real estate stunt, which is small but genuinely a first of its kind. In May 2025 a Missouri developer named Daniel Westermier listed a commercial property in Sedalia, Missouri, described as four buildings and 25,000 square feet next to the Amtrak line, and said he would accept PURPE as payment. The listing carried the Crexi property identifier 1917392. Whether anyone ever paid for a building in frog tokens is a separate question, and one nobody has answered publicly. Announcing that you would is still the most concrete thing any Pepe derivative has done with a deed. The cost of three years of visibility is the usual one. A BSC contract at 0x9FAF4eb1a0Fce51149e5c7B9E4Ede6191D2B2d80 took the name in October 2025, a Monad one at 0xe8548976DddDCC9447208Ca3a776848337037777 in November 2025, a Solana token at DJAauapioisQAumQMdgcZWAPdkYbkA562u3xXB9d8FuR posts an obviously fabricated four billion dollar valuation, and on 23 August 2026 a pump.fun mint appeared with a leading space in the ticker, the oldest impersonation trick on the chain. None of them are it. The one from 3 July 2023 is.
The Chain Trail
