Tsunami (Rescue Dog) is a Venezuelan search-and-rescue border collie who became a national symbol of hope in late June 2026 after helping locate survivors buried in the rubble of a catastrophic double earthquake. Once an abused, abandoned street puppy, he grew into one of Latin America's most decorated rescue dogs, and his story spread rapidly across Spanish- and English-language media.
Origin
On June 24, 2026, two powerful quakes (roughly magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, seconds apart) struck northern Venezuela, killing more than 1,700 people. Tsunami, an eight-to-nine-year-old border collie handled by rescuer Jorge Beens of the K-SAR ECID canine unit, was deployed to the collapsed buildings. Rescued as a starving, mistreated puppy from the streets of Caracas years earlier, he had already served in the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake response before this deployment.
Spread
Coverage exploded in the days after the quake. Major Spanish-language outlets including El Tiempo, El Comercio, BioBioChile, Record and Diario Las Americas ran his story, and it crossed into English via Forbes, Hola and My Modern Met. The abused-stray-to-hero framing, paired with a precise rescue of a trapped elderly man, made him a viral emblem of resilience.
Legacy
Reports credited Tsunami with contributing to the rescue of at least 13 people found alive (some accounts cite a career total near 300 assisted rescues), and coverage noted the 2026 mission was billed as his final deployment before retirement. He became shorthand for the irreplaceable role of canine rescue teams and for the redemption of an abandoned animal.
