It is the crying half of the "Happy Happy Happy Cat" universe, an ongoing collaborative cartoon series assembled by strangers, and it is one of the earliest mainstream examples of AI-edited animal content becoming a genuine meme rather than slop.

A cat named Milly stuck her tongue out at an Instagram camera in July 2022. A month later she was the face of every refusal to do homework, chores, or anything else asked of anyone. El Sapo Pepe is a green toad from Argentine children's television who has spent decades being adored by preschoolers and is now the star witness in crypto's oldest paternity dispute: who really invented Pepe. The claim that Matt Furie's frog descends from him is not a crypto invention. Infowars raised it in a United States federal court in November 2018 as a defence against Furie's copyright suit, Furie swore he had never heard of the toad, and Infowars settled for 15,000 dollars anyway. By 2026 the largest of those pages, @evildogi, had roughly 350,000 TikTok followers and a merch store selling plush pillows. Fred became the quieter half of one of the most politically charged animal-rights firestorms of the year, remembered as the raccoon who died next to a squirrel over a rabies test that came back negative.

Hobbes is the pet cat of Solana super-influencer Ansem (blknoiz06), whose name reveal in April 2024 sparked one of the fastest cat-coin runs in memecoin history and turned a private house cat into a recurring mascot of Crypto Twitter.

Lil BUB was a tiny, enormous eyed, permanently tongue out cat from Bloomington, Indiana, and one of the defining internet animals of the 2010s. Born on 21 June 2011 as the runt of a feral litter with a stack of genetic conditions, she was adopted by Mike Bridavsky, photographed onto Tumblr that November, and shoved into the mainstream by Reddit's front page. What separates her from the rest of the cat celebrity class is what the fame was spent on. Her fund with the ASPCA has pushed hundreds of thousands of dollars into shelters for special needs animals, and a crowdfunded sequencing project found a mutation in her genome previously documented in only a handful of humans and one mouse. She died on 1 December 2019, aged eight.

Meccha Chameleon is a viral 2026 multiplayer hide-and-seek game where players paint their character models to blend into the scenery while hunters with paint shotguns try to spot them. Built by Japanese solo developer lemorion_1224, it detonated across TikTok and YouTube in late June 2026 as “find the hidden player” clips turned into a global visual-puzzle meme.

Monthly Salary Cat is a hand drawn sticker cat from the Chinese internet whose entire personality is being broke. She is a Ragdoll, drawn in thin flat lines with no background and a permanently defeated face, and she is named after the fact that buying her cost her owner exactly one month of pay. Her regular co-star is an orange ex stray called Miaomiao. The stickers spread through Chinese chat apps as shorthand for payday euphoria and end of month poverty, broke out into the mainstream around June 2026, and then went global when people animated her and set her dancing to sped up pop tracks. By late July 2026 she had Telegram sticker packs, crochet keychains, a TikTok AR effect and a swarm of tokens using her name.

Mr Sue is a goldfish who cannot swim on his own and gets around in a custom buoyancy harness his owner built for him, a contraption the internet immediately called a wheelchair. Owner Angela Chaisson made the rig after swim bladder problems left him sinking upside down at the bottom of the tank for months, and the clips of him puttering around upright turned him into an animal celebrity across TikTok, X and Instagram. Normie is internet slang for a conventional, mainstream person — someone outside a given subculture who doesn't get the joke. Born in recovery-group and forum slang and sharpened into a pejorative on 4chan, it became one of the defining in-group versus out-group words of 2010s internet culture.

NPC Wojak is a flat grey face with a blank expression, used to accuse someone of having no inner life and simply repeating whatever the group says. It began as a 4chan thread question in 2016, became a mass-produced insult in 2018, got covered by the New York Times, and then, in a twist nobody scripted, was reclaimed by TikTok streamers who performed as NPCs for money.

Pakalu Papito is a joke Twitter persona built on a real man's photograph, posting broken-English one-liners as a fictional convenience store clerk with an unusually close relationship with his camel. After the original account was suspended in 2018, imitators kept the face alive under the name Xavier, who mutated into a reply-guy meme that Indian meme pages loved and much of the internet openly resented.

Rave Cat is a kitten that appears to be dancing on a wet beach, posted on 6 August 2026 by the X account @belindomita with a caption in Spanish that translates to "My alarm ringing for 10 minutes. Me in my dreams:". The joke is a piece of sleep science everyone has lived through: when an alarm goes off during REM sleep, the brain would rather write the noise into the dream than admit it is morning. The cat is what that looks like from the inside. The post cleared 470,000 likes in three days, TikTok turned it into a format within hours, and by the next afternoon there were contracts on three chains named after a cat nobody has been able to identify.

A bait-and-switch prank where a link promised to lead somewhere useful instead dumps the viewer into the music video for Rick Astley's 1987 single "Never Gonna Give You Up."

The Sad Hamster, also called Hamster With Big Eyes or Hampter, is an edited photo of a grey hamster with comically oversized, teary eyes, usually paired with the 'world's smallest violin' tune. It became one of the breakout TikTok reaction memes of 2024.

A YouTube web-series of singing human heads emerging from toilets battling camera-headed characters, and the byword for 'brainrot' Gen Alpha humor.

Skynet is the defence computer from The Terminator that decides humanity is the threat, and Judgment Day is the morning it acts on that. The franchise put exact dates on it, which is why it became a meme instead of just a plot: the T-800 in Terminator 2 states that Skynet goes online on 4 August 1997 and becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time on 29 August. Every year since, 29 August turns into an unofficial internet holiday, and every real advance in machine learning gets tagged with the same three words. The engineer who builds the thing, Miles Bennett Dyson, is the part crypto found useful in 2026.

'Stonks' is the deliberate misspelling of 'stocks,' paired with the surreal bald 'Meme Man' character standing in front of a rising market chart. It became the internet's universal caption for financial decisions both brilliant and disastrous.

Tsutsuji is the cat who lived with Doge. Atsuko Sato, the Japanese kindergarten teacher who adopted the shiba inu Kabosu in 2008 and whose blog produced the single most valuable photograph in internet history, also kept cats, and Tsutsuji was the senior one. She appears throughout the same blog that gave the world Doge, sometimes in the same frame, generally looking unimpressed at being adjacent to fame. Her one great line comes from Sato's book about Kabosu, where Sato's husband is quoted saying that if Kabo-chan is DOGE then Tsutsuji-chan is CATE, because the cat had a habit of striking exactly the same pose as the dog. Crypto heard this and did what crypto does. Tsutsuji has been minted at least nine separate times across Ethereum, Solana and Robinhood Chain since December 2023, none of it with any input from Sato, and no two of those contracts agree on which one came first.

'Unc' is African American Vernacular English slang, short for 'uncle,' used both as a term of endearment for a respected older man and as a playful jab that someone has gotten old, out of touch or 'washed.' In the 2020s it exploded into the broader meme of achieving 'Unc status.'
